JUST WALKING

Walking…just walking

Away from the hum and drum

Away from the hub and bub

Away from the whine and grind of this rusty city

Couldn’t take it, they will say

Well, let them

This place isn’t all it’s cracked up to be

I saw a man today selling boxes to homeless people

Business was brisk

Did you know that the stone from the Pyramids

Would build a wall round England ten feet tall?

They say John the Baptist was gay

Funny the thoughts that come into your head when you’re walking

There was an old woman who lived in a hovel

She didn’t have any shoes but no one cared

She fell down one day

The hospital put her in a trolley for a few weeks

Then sent her away

Back to her hovel, her piss-stained bed, her broken radio

Her clock that didn’t tick, her bare cupboards, her solitary chair

Carried her up three flights, stood her in front of a walking frame

Said ‘take care of yourself, dear’

The whole fucking world anaesthetised by indifference

I NEVER WALKED A MILE

I NEVER WALKED A MILE

I never walked a mile
Without thinking of you
I was always walking towards your smile
Towards your twinkling eyes so blue

I never dreamed a dream
Without seeing a vision of you
I was always the cat who got the cream
When I awoke and found my vision true

I never told a tale
That didn’t have you in it
My laughter as I recalled
Was at least three times every minute

And now that you are are gone
I find myself walking even more
My journey it will be long
Until I find that ?&@%*** stevedore.

DRIVING WHILE BLACK

DRIVING WHILE BLACK

Don’t drive while you’re black
‘Cos you may get stopped on the way back
From wherever you have been
Doing bad things to country and queen

Never drive when you’re black
Looking for white people to attack
‘Cos that’s a crime too
Though it’s okay to drive when you’re blue

Driving while black
Means you could get shot in the back
For turning left or failing to stop
By some trigger-happy, non-black cop

Some other ‘crimes’ while being black;
Smoking while black
Learning while black
Walking while black
Shopping while black
Eating while black

In fact almost any damn thing while black
