SILLY OLD FOOL

DAWNING

‘Silly old fool’, someone

Shouts in your wake

And in the brilliantly-lit

Cube of time ‘old’ is dangled

Before your eyes

And won’t go away

She called you old! And

In the instant it takes you

To turn around and see

The solitary young woman

Bend down to retrieve her parcel

It dawns on you that you are

Nearer the end than the beginning

Much nearer

It comes, not creeping in the dark,

But galloping unstoppably

Over the horizon

And you never see it

Silly old fool

TICK TOCK…TICK TOCK

PRISONER

The ticking clock is silent

Articulating emptiness

Mainspring not busted

Just not required.

Time gulling it over the horizon

Speckled in the distance

The residue left behind

Not worth a light

Over some visionary hill

Virtual reality is real enough

More and more scream the worms

Turning every which way but one

More length, more depth

More leisure, more pleasure

More love, more life

Bur mostly more coin

Nothing prepares us for this

The hand that held the answers

Trembling now before new idols

Knowledge bootless as experience

New waves have old beginnings

But tired dogs own no snap

It’s the rut we’re stuck in, see?

Slow going forward but no going back

Sitting by time’s window

Waiting for the daily rebuff

To come winging by

Sifting little crumbs of comfort

From the embers

Screaming all the way……

TRUE ENEMY

TRUE ENEMY

Those whom the Gods love mostly die young
For time is the true enemy of everyone
The beauty that time cherishes
Is the beauty that soon perishes
And when time and beauty meet
It is always high noon on the street
Something has got to give;
Beauty dies so that others may live
But all dawns prove false dawns
And the payback is still to come
For time catches up with us all eventually
And not just the unlucky some.

TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE

FRIGID-AIRE

 Glacial white ice-box

Clinically humming your cynical tune

Cat-purring smooth on the outside

Insides as cold as an icy moon

 Your  stalactite smile frozen rigid

I never would believe you were frigid

            SEASONAL

           Time tolls the seasons

            And men grow old

            Chasing rainbows to the end.

Death has neither rhyme nor reason

But we all get there in the end
