HISTORY LESSONS

See the walking dead
And the carcasses piled high
Like wood on bonfire night;
Clothes, shoes, hair and jewellery
Neatly stacked in separate heaps

Gaunt history staring us in the face

Confetti droning overhead
Gently napalming young bodies
Flesh peeling
Delta-Mekong dots on the map

Where’s Daddy?
Gone to fight the yellow man

Burning deserts erupting
Below technology-laden skies
Push-button warfare
Timed for peak viewing.

Blind killing-fields

Scorched earth, scorched body;
What’s the difference?

THE SINGULARITY

imagesCA6FWPSRimages

THE SINGULARITY
The singularity or
To be more precise
The technological singularity,
This thing for techno-utopians
Looking for immortality,
Is it real?
The singularitarians are banking
On it being so,
Seemingly willing to stay alive
For long enough,
By fair means or foul,
To benefit from this man-made God
That grants transcendence.
Artificial intelligence rules
They hope, despite
The doomsayers and techno-dystopians
Who claim it will malevolently bring about
The end of the world.

The end of civilisation as we know it

History and Hollywood are on their side;
Frankenstein, Skynet, the Matrix
Are their testimonials
When AI exceeds human intelligence
Everything changes
A smart AI breeds a smarter AI…and so on
Ad-infinitum, perhaps,
Leaving human intelligence without comprehension.
Driverless cars
Automated financial transactions
Language translation systems
Already better and faster than humans,
The list grows bigger daily.
Who needs humans, really?

HITCHBOT THE HITCHHIKER

hitchhitchbot
HITCHBOT THE ROBOT WILL ATTEMPT TO HITCHHIKE ACROSS CANADA, STARTING ON 27th JULY. GOOD LUCK HITCH!

HITCHBOT THE HITCHHIKER

Hi! I’m Hitchbot and I’m hiking not biking
From Halifax to Victoria
Then maybe reverse the process
From British Columbia to Nova Scotia.
I have no driver’s licence – yet –
Otherwise your services I could forget.
I am short of stature
And I wear wellies when it’s wet.
I know I look like a dustbin on legs
And my thumbs are really
Just glove-covered pegs.
I have no neck to speak of
And there are times to be honest
When I am tempted to just sneak off
Into the Canadian dark
And comfort myself in some technology park.
I mean – a welly-wearing droid
Is something most drivers
Would swerve violently to avoid!
