I NEVER WALKED A MILE

I never walked a mile
Without thinking of you
I was always walking towards your smile
Towards your twinkling eyes so blue

I never dreamed a dream
Without seeing a vision of you
I was always the cat who got the cream
When I awoke and found my vision true

I never told a tale
That didn’t have you in it
My laughter as I recalled
Was at least three times every minute

And now that you are are gone
I find myself walking even more
My journey it will be long
Until I find that ?&@%*** stevedore.

THE ANALEMMA

THE ANALEMMA

Standing here in the same spot
Every day
Makes me think of you
This figure-of-eight feeling
I sometimes get
Is not something new
Your smile, your being,
Your overall everywhere-ness
Mingled with your general couldn’t-care-less-ness
Make me think that perhaps I’m wrong
It is an abstract thing
Like a solar analemma
It has no physical existence
Except in images long-gone.

TRUE ENEMY

TRUE ENEMY

Those whom the Gods love mostly die young
For time is the true enemy of everyone
The beauty that time cherishes
Is the beauty that soon perishes
And when time and beauty meet
It is always high noon on the street
Something has got to give;
Beauty dies so that others may live
But all dawns prove false dawns
And the payback is still to come
For time catches up with us all eventually
And not just the unlucky some.

COMING OF AGE

COMING OF AGE

Twenty one years of it;
I thought you might cry enough
You know – the tough gets going
When the going gets tough

But not a bit of it;
We are still going strong
I have wronged you on and off
But you have righted all the wrong

I hope you never get sick of it;
That love will carry you on
Me? I’m already in the thick of it
Clearing the path for another twenty one!

BEING HERE

BEING HERE

I may never be a poet
I may never rhyme;
(having no time for all that crap)
But one thing I do know;
People don’t stay, they go;
And they never come back

Oh, they are there – empty;
Looking like they once were
But deep down you know it’s not really them;
Just effigies
Waiting for you to go too

She loved you once you know;
She would admit it
Now fire has seared her mind
Cleansing the important bits;
It’s not love that sparkles now,
Just tolerance
And not a lot of that

So where do you go
When the fire has burnt itself
But into it;
Ashes to ashes
Dust to December
And no better for it;
Complacency –
And no end to the pain of it
